'It was my mistake, and I’m sorry' — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepares for D.C. apology tour

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg will take his apology tour to Capitol Hill on Tuesday.
The embattled CEO will apologize for failing to safeguard user data and not doing more to prevent Russian operatives from exploiting his platform to amplify discord amid the 2016 presidential campaign, according to prepared testimony published online Monday by the House Energy and Commerce Committee

It’s a big week for Facebook as Mark Zuckerberg testifies at two Congressional hearings, starting Tuesday, as he answers for the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal. Some of the lawmakers who will be grilling the Facebook CEO have given a preview of what Zuckerberg should expect. Rep. Anna Eshoo, the Silicon Valley congresswoman, didn’t mince words in an interview with this news organization last week, in which she said she hopes to tie in the privacy questions over Cambridge Analytica — the political data consulting firm that obtained personal information of up to 87 million Facebook users without their permission — with the lingering issues about how Facebook’s platform was used by Russian trolls to try to influence the U.S. presidential election.
“This really rises to a moral issue, because Facebook’s platform was weaponized to do damage to our democracy,” Esho, D-Palo Alto, said. “An American company, I believe, has a responsibility to America.”
Eshoo, who’s on the House and Energy Committee, will get her chance to question Zuckerberg on Wednesday, a day after his scheduled appearance before a joint session of the Senate Commerce and Judiciary committees. In addition, Zuckerberg was reportedly meeting with other lawmakers Monday in Washington.
Others are weighing in with what they hope the Congressional committees will ask the Facebook CEO this week. We take a look at three key questions:
What took Facebook so long to talk about the Cambridge Analytica data leak?
Facebook found out about the privacy “breach of trust” in 2015, and banned the app that had been the source of the breach — a personality quiz app developed by Cambridge University researcher Aleksandr Kogan, who then sold the information he gathered to Cambridge Analytica.
It wasn’t until mid-March that the story really blew up after reports by the New York Times and the U.K.-based Observer. The company banned Cambridge Analytica from its platform just last month, and it took Zuckerberg a few days to publicly address the issue.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will be on Capitol Hill next week to face members of Congress — including Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal — upset with how the social media giant has handled the personal data of its users.
The Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees are holding a joint hearing on Tuesday afternoon with Zuckerberg as its sole witness. He’ll appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday.
Blumenthal sits on both the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees. He has been on a Twitter tear of late, laying into Facebook over reports that the identities and information of most of its 2 billion users worldwide could possibly have been obtained by “malicious actors” using the company’s search tools, according to the Washington Post.
