Report: Facebook Donated to 46 of 55 Members on Committee that Will Question Zuckerberg
Facebook and political groups associated with it have reportedly donated to 46 of the 55 members on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which will question Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg next week.
According to a USA Today analysis, members on this year’s House Energy and Commerce Committee have received roughly $381,000 in Facebook-related contributions since 2007 with the average Republican getting $6,800 and the average Democrat getting $6,750. The report was based on data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
Committee Chair Greg Walden (R-OR) reportedly received $27,000 while Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NY) got $7,000 in Facebook-related contributions. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), the Bay Area Democrat whose district is reportedly home to many Facebook executives and employees, got the most contributions, receiving $51,050 in the last decade.
Walden and Pallone announced on Wednesday that Zuckerberg will be testifying before Congress next week on “critical consumer data privacy issues.”

Dutch journalist has uncovered a pile of Royal Dutch Shell documents as old as 1988 that showed the company understood the gravity of climate change, the company's large contribution to it and how hard it would be to stop it.
The oil giant commissioned a 1988 report titled The Greenhouse Effect that calculated that the Shell group alone was contributing 4 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions through its oil, natural gas and coal products. And the report warned that "by the time global warming becomes detectable it could be too late to take effective countermeasures to reduce the effects or even to stabilize the situation."
The 1988 report said that scientists believed that the effects would become detectable late in the 20th or early 21st century.
The report was written by members of Shell's Greenhouse Effect Working Group and was based on a 1986 study, though the document reveals that Shell had commissioned "greenhouse effect" reports as early as 1981.

today Facebook is releasing a tool that will allow its users to see if their Facebook profile was harvested by Cambridge Analytica. Facebook says 87 million people were affected, 71 million of them in the US. It makes for a compelling story about egregious personal privacy harms committed in pursuit of electoral victories. In response, Facebook has clamped down on access to its users' data, and in his testimony to Congress this week, CEO Mark Zuckerberg promises to make political advertising on the platform more transparent.
But focusing solely on the purloined data is a mistake. Much more important are the behavioral models Cambridge Analytica built from the data. Even though the company claims to have deleted the data sets in 2015 in response to Facebook’s demands, those models live on, and can still be used to target highly specific groups of voters with messages designed to leverage their psychological traits. Although the stolen data sets represent a massive collection of individual privacy harms, the models are a collective harm, and far more pernicious.
In what follows, I argue that Cambridge Analytica and its parent and sister companies were among the first to figure out how to turn behavioral algorithms into a portable worldview—a financially valuable, politically potent model of how humans behave and how society should be structured. To understand Cambridge Analytica, the anti-democratic vision it represents, and the potentially illegal behavior that its techniques may make possible, follow the models.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a five-year, $3.1 million federal grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for a project led by University at Buffalo department of community health and health behavior assistant professor Dr. Lucia Leone to expand access to fresh food in underserved communities through mobile produce markets.
"Access to high-quality, healthy foods is a real challenge for far too many," Higgins said. "This project, which aims to reach people where they are, will help to drive successful outcomes in the advancement of healthier communities."
This new program builds off a smaller project Leone conducted with colleagues from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a postdoctoral fellow and faculty member before joining the faculty at UB.

U.S. employers added a modest 103,000 jobs in March after several months of robust gains, though the government’s overall jobs report Friday suggested that the labor market remains fundamentally healthy.
The unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent, a 17-year low, for a sixth straight month, the government said. Average hourly pay ticked up, climbing 2.7 percent compared with a year earlier.
The government also revised down its estimate of job growth for January and February by a combined 50,000. Still, over the past six months, employers have added a healthy average of 211,000 jobs, evidence that hiring in the United States remains strong and the economy on solid footing in its ninth year of recovery from the Great Recession.

Philip Roth has declared that Trump “speaks jerkish”, while Columbia University professor of linguistics John McWhorter calls his speech “oddly adolescent”.
Others see it as one of the reasons he got elected
“I think a lot of his base is counting on the notion that he can be the tough guy and tell it as it is,” Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a Calvin College historian who has done a comparative study of Trump and Hillary Clinton’s speaking styles, told the Guardian. “It very much reinforces this notion of macho leadership.”
Where Clinton was meticulous, offered concrete examples, and qualified her claims, Trump sought to knock all caution and nuance away, rejecting “political correctness”, name-calling his opponents and ad-libbing on stage before large crowds.
“People were drawn to his unorthodox style and his strong masculine leadership,” said Du Mez, who is currently writing a book on evangelicals, masculinity and the rise of Donald Trump. “There’s been a hunger for that aggressive style of leadership, and a belief that a more calm and calculating foreign policy hasn’t gotten us very far.”

And how were these federal judges appointed? Through political patronage by way of "greasy" contributions to politicians by law firms, corporations, labor unions and other special interests. This is why what we have on the federal bench, by and large, are political hack "yes men and women" who do the bidding of the elites who put them in power.
This is a very perilous state of affairs, as without a courageous and non-biased federal judiciary, Americans are left defenseless to the corrupt whims of the establishments of both political parties and these special interests.
As one example, Freedom Watch and I have pending crucial cases to finally bring Hillary Clinton to justice under the Constitution and rule of law. One of those cases involves the Wicked Witch of the Left's use of an unsecure private email server while she was, regrettably, secretary of state. This server was predictably hacked by adverse powers, such as Iran, Russian and China, one or more of whom then transmitted the location of Ambassador Christopher Stephens to terrorists in Benghazi, Libya. These terrorists then murdered not just Stephens, but those around him, such as undercover agents Ty Woods and Sean Smith.
I represent the parents of Woods and Smith, Charles Woods and Patricia Smith, in both a wrongful death and defamation suit against Hillary Clinton. To be sure, no one other than yours truly would ever take this action. Our "congressional fools" would rather prance around at Fox News giving meaningless interviews than actually do their job, and the disgraceful Attorney General Jeff Sessions, spends most of his time covering his backside and refusing to appoint a special counsel, for fear the current special counsel, Robert Mueller, at the urging of the Democrats, will indict him for alleged Russian collusion, perjury and obstruction of justice. The case has thus far been dismissed by a politicized leftist judge appointed by, you guessed it, the former "Muslim in Chief," Barack Hussein Obama. To add insult to injury and to curry favor with Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign with the obvious hope of higher appointment should Hillary have been elected president, this leftist judge, Amy Berman Jackson, dismissed the suit on the eve of Memorial Day, disrespectfully sticking it to these "Gold Star" parents as they were grieving for their heroic fallen sons. Then, when I took the contrived and frivolous ruling of Judge Jackson up on appeal, the panel that heard argument were "mysteriously" comprised of two Obama appointees and one establishment Republican jurist. Incredibly, I learned by accessing Federal Election Commission records that one the Obama appointees had donated money to the Wicked Witch to further her 2008 presidential bid! Her name is Patricia Millet.

The White House has announced tariffs on foreign steel and up to $50 billion in Chinese goods, and the Chinese retaliated this week with similarly large tariffs on key U.S. exports.
