WASHINGTON – Cybersecurity officials from the U.S. and United Kingdom accused the Russian government Monday of sponsoring attacks for possible use in espionage or stealing intellectual property from large corporations down to individual homes. The attacks have targeted millions of computer networks worldwide through equipment such as routers, switches and firewalls, according to the officials from the White House, Department of Homeland Security and FBI, and counterparts in Britain. The targets included government and private organizations, including internet service providers, officials said. The goal of the announcement Monday was to warn corporations and individuals to protect themselves against attacks. “We hold the Kremlin responsible,” said Jeanette Manfra, assistant secretary for cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security.

INSPECTORS BLOCKED: As the U.S. feared, experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are not getting access to the site of the April 7 suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria that prompted retaliatory strikes from the U.S., France and Britain. The OPCW inspectors arrived in Syria last week but have not been able to carry out their fact-finding mission in Douma, a suburb of Damascus. The president’s loyal, longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, will eventually turn on his most prized client as he potentially faces “decades” of prison time, according to the attorney representing adult film star Stormy Daniels.
Michael Avenatti, Daniels’s lawyer in the case against Cohen, made his prediction Monday night just hours after a federal judge appeared to indicate she would not allow President Donald Trump’s legal team to first vet documents and files seized by the FBI in a raid of Cohen’s office eight days ago.
Avenatti said he had little doubt that Cohen would eventually be charged.
“I think Michael Cohen is going to be indicted in the next 90 days,” Avenatti told MSNBC. “There’s little to no question in my mind that’s going to happen.”

A Cessna 525 two-engine jet crashed Sunday night into a mountainside near Crozet, killing one person, authorities reported.
Late Monday afternoon, Virginia State Police said the the investigation had been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board as those agencies try to determine a cause in the fatal plane crash.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday, state police responded to a report of a downed plane near Saddle Hollow Road in Crozet. The 1996 fixed-wing, twin-engine Cessna crashed in a remote area and one body was recovered from the wreckage. It appears the aircraft had only one occupant, state police said.
Initially, reports indicated area residents heard a large explosion and saw fire in a field on the mountainside.
First responders reported an "extensive debris field" around the crash and a fire burning near the top of the debris field, according to radio traffic.
The remains of the body are being transferred to the Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy, examination and positive identification.
Multiple fire and EMT crews were on hand at the scene. The crash happened shortly after a line of severe thunderstorms raked the area.
Conversations between first responders indicated the plane was flying under Visual Flight Rules, which generally preclude operations during heavy weather or reduced visibility.
The crash site is on private property, so media were not allowed access to the scene. The News Leader will update this story when additional information is available.

That question keeps me up at night.
My wife and I are blessed with 10 grandchildren. The oldest is 10, and the youngest is two months. I look at those little faces, so young, innocent and full of promise, and my heart bursts. Later though, I worry how much we have allowed our nation to degenerate, at least in my lifetime.
Our country has been turned upside down. What once was right now is wrong. American values, long a beacon to the entire world, are crumbling, eerily paralleling our roads and bridges.An all too large population in this country takes some sort of undeserved government hand-out or scam. These cheats are people capable of honest work. As of this date, six million jobs are available in this country.
The list of the supposed aggrieved grows by the day — Latin American nations allow their cast-offs to illegally flee here by the millions — to be educated, housed and fed by American tax dollars. The Left stands at the border with empty wallets and open arms. When citizens demand this practice halted by Donalt Trump’s promised wall, it is met with a wave of assault by liberals.
The small minority of the godless in our country demand, of a nation built on Christian values, the removal of God from schools and public areas, only to be replaced by an appeasement of Muslim religious practices in the name of “understanding” of others.
Realizing there is strength in numbers, an LGB community that has become widely embraced today, morphed into an acronym that is as confusing as it is antagonistic. If you haven’t been keeping up, it now is LGBTQQIP2SAA: which is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit (2S), androgynous and asexual. The result is we no longer know who will be in our bathroom.
Super-charged by a wave of advertisements from personal injury attorneys brazenly promising the supposedly aggrieved what is “rightfully” due, too many Americans now consider themselves “victims.” They clog up the court systems, and our television, driving up insurance costs. Remember when people would only take that which they had earned?
Speaking of attorneys, of which most are upstanding citizens, did anyone note this past week our right of attorney-client privilege was usurped? President Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, had his office, home and hotel room raided by the FBI. Seems they were searching for evidence the president might have paid a porn actress hush money long before he ran for president.
This circumvention of the law was directed at the behest of Robert Mueller. He is the guy who, more than a year ago, was given unconstrained access to find out if Donald Trump colluded with the Russians to win the election. Evidently, Mueller’s mandate included anything else he wanted investigated … except the Clintons. So now, rather than Russian interference, he decided to have Trump’s sex life investigated. A cynical skeptic like me might believe this information will come in mighty handy during the 2020 election though.
Or perhaps it was just curiosity by Mueller about Stormy Daniels. Mr. Mueller, there are websites out there to satisfy your inquisitiveness.
Meanwhile, as the media continues to stoke the fires of Trump’s sex life to a salivating audience, a war of possible historical importance is brewing between Russia and America about Syria in the Middle East. Some scholars believe this escalating Syrian situation to be of more magnitude than the Bay of Pigs or could at least finally expose Russia’s weakness.
Concerning rights, the Left chips away daily at two of our most basic — speech and gun ownership. Once again, there is the media on the sidelines cheerleading for the Left. All-too expensive universities funded heavily by taxpayers and combined with a growing troublesome student-debt program, regularly allow students to shut down any thought that doesn’t align with their own. Protesting, and littering, beats going to class.
And did you notice we now evidently take our direction on gun control from high school children, ignorant for the need of a well-armed militia to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. Think of the media exploitation of this sad point in our history.
At the same time, the Left is screaming to take away constitutional rights, we are required, through taxes, to fork over more than half billion dollars per year to Planned Parenthood, so they can abort babies. Abortions continue to be the biggest killer in this country, and there is no end in sight, mostly because spineless conservative politicians rail against it, then sit on the sidelines shrugging.
The size and power of companies such as Google, Amazon and Facebook continues to grow, unchecked for monopolistic practices, by a government too interested in political gamesmanship and their own power than to represent the working middle class who voted for their representation.
Megabusinesses that once were apolitical now are dictating what on side of an issue one must be in order to do business with them. Consider some banks no longer are loaning money to those involved in the NRA or arms production, a blatant coercion of American rights. Yet, a bakery cannot be denied on who they can serve.
On the heels of IRS fiasco, Mueller’s witch hunt has uncovered a growing feeling we no longer can trust agencies such as the FBI or Department of Justice. The former has been led by political hacks, interested only in protecting the swamp, while holding on to the power to ruin the lives of any individual. The latter, going back to Clinton, has been either corrupt, biased, inept or as in the case now, afraid of the Left.
States such as Illinois, governed for decades with an iron fist by a greedy and ruthless Speaker of the House, is on the verge of insolvency at best, or the pruning of promised pensions at worst, taxing their denizens into oblivion.
California is threatening to secede from the Union while flaunting federal laws. In the meantime, their homeless population is exploding. California even is considering dividing into three separate states, which would result in more dingbat politicians roaming the halls of Washington.
Both states are losing residents at an alarming rate.

- Pentagon chief spokesperson Dana White insisted that "this operation does not represent a change in US policy" and was not an attempt to unseat Assad or become involved in the Syrian Civil War.
- It was a response to the Assad regime’s “illegal tactics” in continuing to use chemical weapons and reflected a moral imperative to intervene.
- U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, the Director of the Joint Staff, said the Syrians had been unable to have any “material interference” in the operation and all the missiles reached their targets.
- McKenzie said there had been no indication of a military response from "actors" within Syria, but that American troops in the country remained ready to defend themselves.
- He described the mission, which was coordinated so that the 105 total standoff weapons all hit their targets around 4 AM local time in Syria, as “precise, overwhelming, effective."
- The operation “significantly crippled” Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities and despite reports of evacuations of some production equipment and other materiel, some fixtures were likely too large to move to another, safe location.
- 76 missiles struck the Barzah Research Center in Damascus, including 57 Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles (TLAM) and 19 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) air-launched cruise missiles.
