Did the collapse of local journalism help give us Donald Trump?
That’s the intriguing thesis of new research published by Politico. Reporters Shawn Musgrave and Matthew Nussbaum compared election results with overall trends in how many people in a given area actually subscribe to a newspaper. As they write:
The results show a clear correlation between low subscription rates and Trump’s success in the 2016 election, both against Hillary Clinton and when compared to [Mitt] Romney in 2012.

I was once one of those journalists. I spent evenings at small-town city halls and school board meetings, and days interviewig local activists and ucovering wrongdoing, not to metion store oppeninngs and library closings. People in those cities knoew me- and they came to trust me, seeking me out to give me leads or simply tell me what they thought about the events of the day. The chances of running into someone like my younger self are much smaller today than it was 20 years ago. Outside the marquee bands, the newspaper indistry is ailing, Employment is down more than 50 percent since 2000. Local news coverage has, correspondigly, withered. And that, in turn, leads to less political engagement. Whe local news doesn't exist, local hournalists ca;t play the role of trusted intermediary. The truth-teller is emonized, while the con artist goes all byt unchallenged. Do you really beed me to tell you who wins in that scenario? We all know who lives in the White House now. The con artist is winning- at least for now.
